While I love strawberry, vanilla, and mint chocolate chip ice creams, sherbet is light and refreshing. It is perfect to eat on a hot summer day! This orange sherbet recipe has a fresh orange flavour that comes from using both orange juice and orange zest.
What is the difference between sherbet and sorbet?
Sherbet does not have eggs and contains less dairy. It is way easier to make then ice cream because you don't have to make a custard for this. The ingredients are simply mixed in a bowl and then churned in your ice cream maker. Super simple!
Sorbets are dairy free and are made with fruit and ice. They are not as creamy as sherbet.
Ingredients
- Orange juice - either store bought orange juice (just make sure the ingredients say 100% orange juice), or freshly squeezed (you will need 2-3lbs of oranges).
- Orange zest - use a microplane or small grater.
- Granulated sugar
- Salt
- Heavy whipping cream
- Milk - I recommend whole milk or 2%.
How to make sherbet
Whisk the orange juice and sugar together in a medium bowl. Once sugar is dissolved, add orange zest, salt, heavy whipping cream and milk to the bowl. Stir to combine and then cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator until it is cool.
Churn the mixture in your ice cream machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Scoop the sherbet into a container. Cover and store it in the freezer until it is frozen.
